The event will gather representatives from the United Nations and the European Union, as well as numerous distinguished scholars and experts in the field of sanctions.
The conference is co-organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, the Centre for International Humanitarian and Operational Law and MINOS.
Politicologenetmaal 2025 (12-13 June 2025)
A workshop on sanctions, organised by Dawid Walentek, Francesco Giumelli and Viktor Szép, will take place on 12-13 June at the University of Groningen.

Dawid Walentek and Clara Portela will hold a workshop on the European take on economic coercion. The workshop will take place in Kraków, at the Jagiellonian University. More information, as well as the call for papers, can be found here.

MINOS will hold a roundtable discussion on teaching sanctions. An interdisciplinary panel will look at the challenges and opportunities associated with teaching sanctions. Participants will reflect on sanctions teaching in the existing curriculum, discuss the challenges of an interdisciplinary approach to teaching sanctions and look at future perspectives.

Ghent University, MINOS and the Provincie Oost-Vlanderen hosted an evening lecture with EU Sanctions Envoy David O’Sullivan, moderated by Prof. Dr. Peter Van Elsuwege.
Mr. O’Sullivan shared the key outcomes of his diplomatic outreach to third countries, exploring the international impact of EU sanctions against Russia. This was the occasion to reflect on the far-reaching geoeconomic consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

25-26 September 2025 – University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
The University of Ljubljana and the Palacký University Olomouc (Centre of International Humanitarian and Operational Law) will host the Ljubljana Sanctions Conference. The conference seeks to foster interdisciplinary debates and aims to bring together practitioners (both from relevant state authorities, such as Ministries of Foreign Affairs, and the private sector), experts and scholars to discuss sanctions in international and European law, politics and economics. It will highlight theoretical, normative, conceptual, and practical challenges on the topic and provide a unique opportunity for exchanging views on, evaluating and analysing lessons learned.

On the occasion of the recent publication of the Cambridge Handbook on Secondary Sanctions and International Law (2024), edited by Tom Ruys, Cedric Ryngaert and Felipe Rodríguez Silvestre, the Assert Institute will hold a panel discussion to explore the legal implications of the rising use of secondary sanctions.
